What Excel to PDF does

Excel to PDF turns an .xlsx workbook into a PDF with real, selectable text, one section per worksheet. OléPDF reads the open XLSX format directly in your browser, lays out the cells with their values, number formats, fonts, colours, borders, merged cells and embedded pictures, and fits the columns to readable pages in portrait or landscape. No spreadsheet program is involved and the workbook is never uploaded.

It is the answer to a familiar request: send me that as a PDF. A price list for a customer, a budget for a board meeting, a timesheet or an inventory that must be archived as it was on a given day, a schedule that needs to be printed cleanly. The file you get opens anywhere and cannot be edited by accident.

How to convert an Excel file to PDF

Add the .xlsx file. Only that format is accepted; save .xls, .xlsm or .ods workbooks as .xlsx first.
Press Convert to PDF. There is no options screen: page size and orientation come from each sheet's own settings, and the conversion starts immediately with the message Converting Excel to PDF.
Download the result. The PDF keeps the workbook's name with the suffix _pdf and a timestamp, and its title is taken from the workbook's properties.
To convert several workbooks at once, add them all before starting. You get one PDF per file inside a ZIP, together with a manifest listing inputs and outputs. Batch runs are part of the 7-Day Pass and the Pro plan.

What is rendered and what is left out

Each visible worksheet becomes one or more pages. Page size is A4 unless the sheet is set to Letter, orientation follows the sheet's page setup or is chosen automatically for wide tables, and when a sheet is wider than a page its columns are split across pages with a scale factor so that text stays legible. The first row is repeated at the top of every page of a sheet, and grid lines are drawn if the sheet is set to print them.

Rendered: cell values and formulas as their last saved result, number, date and currency formats, bold and italic, font size and colour, fills, borders, alignment and wrapping, column widths, row heights, merged cells, and PNG or JPEG pictures at their anchored position.
Not rendered: charts, pivot table layouts, conditional formatting rules, data validation, comments, hyperlinks, external links and macros. Hidden sheets, rows and columns are skipped.
A formula without a saved value shows the formula text itself. Save the workbook in your spreadsheet program before converting to avoid that.
Pictures in EMF, WMF or SVG format appear as a grey placeholder with the file name.
Limits: workbooks up to 120 MB, 250,000 cells, 20,000 rows and 2,048 columns. Cells beyond those bounds are ignored and larger files are refused.
Text in Latin, Greek and Cyrillic scripts is embedded directly; Japanese and Hebrew use font subsets fetched from OléPDF's own domain; Arabic and other scripts that need contextual shaping are not supported.

Privacy: the workbook is unpacked and laid out in your browser

An .xlsx file is a ZIP of XML parts. OléPDF opens it with a local decompressor, reads only the parts it needs, worksheets, shared strings, styles, drawings and images, and draws the pages with a local PDF library. Nothing is uploaded, no cell value leaves your computer and no third-party service is called. The only possible extra download is a font subset for Japanese or Hebrew text, served from OléPDF's own domain.

That is why it can be used for the spreadsheets that usually carry the most sensitive numbers: payroll, budgets, customer lists and financial statements.

Frequently asked questions

Is Excel to PDF free?

Yes. Converting one workbook at a time is free and unlimited, with no account, no watermark and no daily cap. Converting several workbooks in a single run requires the 7-Day Pass or Pro.

Is the text in the PDF selectable?

Yes. Cells are written as real text with embedded fonts, so the PDF can be searched, copied from and indexed. Only the embedded pictures are images.

Why are my charts missing?

Charts are not rendered by this converter. If a chart is essential, paste it into the sheet as a picture before saving, or export the chart separately.

Do I need Excel installed?

No. OléPDF reads the .xlsx format itself. Any workbook saved by Excel, LibreOffice, Numbers or Google Sheets in .xlsx works.

How are wide sheets handled?

The sheet's orientation is respected, or landscape is chosen automatically for wide tables. If the columns still do not fit, they are split across pages with a scale factor and the first row is repeated on each page.

Which file types are accepted?

Only .xlsx. Convert .xls, .xlsm, .csv or .ods to .xlsx in your spreadsheet program first.
